Customer name: David Watkins
City/State: Midland, Texas
Where do you fish/launch? Our primary fishing adventure is on the Devil's River in Val Verde County, Texas. I could talk for hours about 40 fish days, with 25 as average and 60 from time to time. One of the premier smallmouth fisheries in the country, the Devils is a mixed bag with largemouth and the occasional sunfish. On a typical trip, we'll land 15 or so in the 4-7 pound class, 15 in the 2-3 pound class and a bunch of small fish. Smallmouth over 18" have to be released for the next guy, Thank God. Depending on the time of year, grubs, worms, soft jerk baits, buzz baits and spinner baits are my lures of preference.

We fish from Old Town Loon 120's, although I'm looking for a smaller craft that will allow for the gear we take on our three day trips. We have added another "paddle holder" on the opposite side of the stock holder. These holders, consisting of a bungee and a "J" hook, function well as rod holders for the rapids and portages we make. Using bait casting gear, we can stow our rods with the tips under the front rigging and the handles under the rear. Securing the mid section with the paddle holder, we can roll a boat and not lose a thing, except the occasional rod guide (at least 2 a trip) and sometimes a reel gets ripped off a rod.

Bearing in mind that most people that brave the Devils once never return, this is a small price to pay for the adventure we have. We have also fashioned 4 pound anchors from old tire weights in a coffee can and have knotted the anchor cord for various depths. By attaching another "J" hook near the paddle holder, anchoring is fast and convenient.

The Devils is located on all private land with some quite hostile landowners. A foot on the bank can cost $750 in criminal trespass fines and camping on the bank is forbidden, of course. With very difficult access both in and out, the river has very little traffic. It is most common on a 3 day trip to see wildlife, Class 2 and 3 rapids and a portage or two without any other human contact, trash or auto engines rumbling in the background. Spring fed, the river is the basis for water quality in the state and in a pinch, would be the only "wild" water I'd ever drink without filtration in the outdoors. There is limited information on this river available on the internet, but with careful planning and intel, this can be a kayaking bass fisherman's dream destination. Feel free to contact me via e-mail if I can help you plan your own trip.

Do you have any good tips for rigging a kayak for fishing? I prefer surface mounted rod holders (just bought 2 from Hook 1, the Scotty fly fishing model and the bait caster/spinning model). Also think a compass or GPS is a necessity. Mounted mine on the concave section between the foot wells. Used a piece of 1" x 4" treated wood, 6" long, radiused the bottom edges length wise, applied a heavy sealer on the wood and applied a strip of self adhesive marine grade Velcro along the radiused edges. I placed additional self adhesive Velcro strips on the high sides of the concave section of the Yak. Works great, holds tight and is easily removable.
Comments: New to kayak fishing, but noticed the advantages my first time out. It was easy to see bait fish and larger game fish feeding along the shoreline where we were paddling. A friend, Wade and I, fished those areas and landed just shy of 30 fish in less than 2 hours.  Lots of schoolies and several keepers.
