Kayak Fishing in Florida

Tell Us What You Got!

Customer Name: Denis LaValle
City/State: Florida Keys
I just finished rigging my first anchor trolley using the parts I ordered from your website. I copied the trolley system from the How-To section on your website with a few modifications. It works perfectly! It is detachable so I can remove it and it is easy to attach it when I need it. I have two more kayak to go!
I live in the Florida Keys and I try to get out on the water as much as possible. I will be using this anchor trolley system for fishing but also to tether the kayak to myself while snorkeling.
I have a Hobie Mirage Adventure, a Cobra Tourer and a Crescent Splash - all sit-on-tops.
The fishing here is awesome! I usually fish for Tarpon, Snapper, Permit, and Bonefish, but you never know what you are going to catch down here. I use live bait - pinfish, ballyhoo or squid. Fishing a 100 Tarpon on a kayak is real fun. I am working on hooking up a detachable anchor system so I can go for a Key West sleigh ride!
I am really glad I came across your website/store. I was searching google for kayak anchor trolleys when I found you. Previously I have done most of my kayak shopping at Austin Kayak or Topkayaker.net, now that I have found you, they have some competition!
Thank you for the great service, I look forward to doing business with you in the future!

Lures, Jigs or Live Bait? Never live bait, only artificials. I prefer Mirro Lure for top water, Gold and Silver spoons for the middle of the water column and soft plastics on the bottom.
Kayak Type: I just got a great deal on a Heritage Redfish 14 that I am rigging now. I have been fishing from a Perception Swing.
Rigging Tips: First and most important, sit in your Kayak and decide then where to put your rod holders. A good anchor trolley is essential and easy to install. Seriously plan your kayak modifications to minimize the amount of holes you have to drill in it. Almost any mods you might comsider have already been done and you can find comprehensive instructions on line.
Comments: I got into kayak fishing as a way to fish while doing my part to protect the enviroment. I rarely keep fish, but when i do it is to eat right away. I prefer to catch, photo and release. I wish everyone would learn proper catch and release and practice it. I look forward to meeting more people who fish from kayaks and enjoying this great sport.

Comments: To the kayakers new to Gulf stream fishing: please be careful out there! The ocean is a very unpredictable place you must constantly watch the weather, and the seas. As well as for the big boats. Please don't go to the gulf stream unless you know what your doing. Be safe and catch the big one! And please have good judgement when your out there.

What kind of fish do you catch or target? I target Redfish - my passion!
Lures, Jigs or Live Bait? I usually use live shrimp, with an occasional gold spoon or swimbait.
What kind of kayak do you have? I paddle an older Keowee 2, with the back seat taken out. I've added flush mount pole holders, and an anchor trolley. A depth finder is not necessary, as I am in knee deep water most of the time (and dragging over oysters the rest of the time).
I am enclosing a picture of a 22"; red, caught recently on a cold and windy day. As you can see, the beauty and wilderness of this part of the gulf coast is spectacular!
Your website and products are great - love the pictures of your West Coast Halibut.

Where do you fish / launch? Ft. Myers, Estero Bay
What kind of fish do you catch or target? Redfish and Snook
What kind of kayak do you have? We have two Perception Jocassee Tandem SIKs. We got them a couple of years ago for family and camping, but in the last 6 months I've got my son interested in fishing and we've been gearing up and rigging ever since. the pics will show what a fantastic kayak the Jocassee is for just about everything, bay or ocean. The rigged pictures don't look like much compared to a loaded SOT but underneath or in the seat behind are the anchor, cast nets, tackle box, cooler, duffle bag, enough leg room to stretch out like I'm reading the paper. The only rigging we've done to it are the Scotty flush mount bait/spinning rod holder which are perfect. My order from you was for 5 more to put a mount mid way up the cockpit because the beast is so big, if you're going solor, you need a mid point socket to put a rod holder. (the 5th is for a light post on the back).
Good Tips for Rigging: Most people I see are on SOTs which require creative rigging. The Scotty rod holders pretty much do it for me. I would suggest a rudder for control while drifting and definately an anchor.
Comments: Although I've only been kayak fishing for about 6 months, I'm quite sure I'm hooked.

Comments:  The kayak wheels work fine on my Hammer Kayak made in Germany over 40 years ago.  It is constructed of fiber glass and is still in great shape.  Through the years, I have used it to catch Snook, Trout, Redfish and Mackeral.  I hooked, but never landed, a few large tarpon.  I use only artificial lures and jigs.   I will be 80 on my birthday next September and I still enjoy fishing from my antique kayak.  It is wonderful to see the new equipment now available.

Customer Name:  Jerry White
City/State:  St. Pete Beach, FL
Where do you fish / launch?  We (my wife fishes as well) live in St. Pete Beach, FL.  I've enclosed a link from paddle-fishing.com (you'll see me as 'pag_yaker' there) showing 'destinations', and that is where we launch and fish.  We live very close to Shell Island/Fort DeSoto, so that's mainly where we fish. http://www.paddle-fishing.com/webpages/destinations.htm
What kind of fish do you catch or target?  Snook, Trout, Redfish, that's the main species we target.  We keep nothing.
What kind of lures, jigs or live bait do you use?  We very rarely use live bait for kayak fishing.  We'll always have a DOA shrimp deployed, normally near-clear or glo.  I like using Rapala 'Skitterwalk' lures, specifically the hard-to-find smaller ones.
What kind of kayak do you have?  Emotion Kayaks.  I'm their 'kayak fishing consultant', and field all concerns about kayak fishing as well as offer input on new product design.  Currently I paddle a Fisherman, my wife paddles an Exhilarator, and I've even rigged my Charger for fishing.  Emotion will be releasing a cockpit boat called the Edge in a couple of weeks.  After the first of the year, they will be releasing a 12.5' model called the Mojo, which will be a great all-around kayak fishing platform.
Tips for Rigging?  1.Before you drill that first hole, spend a few days on the water getting used to how your boat behaves and paddles.  Craft a milk cart with a rod holder or 2 so you can carry gear and perform 'fishing moves'; before you start drilling holes.  After some water time you'll know where rod holders, paddle keepers, etc. need to be.  Sitting in your boat while it's in the driveway is no substitute for a day on the water.  2.Ask the pros, or take a kayak fishing charter.  These people make their living by doing what we like to do recreationally.  You'll learn more about the sport, what you need, and how to do it in one day than from months of research.3.Enter a kayak fishing tournament, and then look at everyone's boats, ask questions.  Most paddle anglers are more than willing to share their knowledge, or at worst voice their opinion.  Plus, it never hurt to watch others and this is a great way to meet new people and share ideas.
